Tango Restaurant & Lounge

At the start of each new quarter at the University of Washington I would make it a point to treat myself with friends (or be treated by someone special on a date) to a delicious dinner at a restaurant I’d never been to before in Seattle.

These tasty outings were a way to indulge myself with good food and company before I had to confine myself to sleepless nights in the library once the quarter picked up (usually after the first week). They were also a way to celebrate a successful previous quarter… sort of like positive reinforcement conditioning.

One of the restaurants I was taken to on one of these outings was Tango restaurant and lounge on Pike Street on Capitol Hill. My date and I were having a caipirinha fetish and drank them all evening with a wonderful selection of latin influenced tapas. Our favorite tapa at Tango was the ‘cheap dates’ (bacon wrapped dates).

The mood was set with dim lighting and zesty, modern décor. A huge party was being accommodated at the time I visited and the waiters were extremely accommodating and patient with the loud/drunk guests. It was a fun evening and a perfect start to a new college quarter.

Purple Cafe & Wine Bar

Purple Café & Wine Bar is the definition of luxurious. It’s large, open atmosphere with a glass exterior and towering spiral showcase of wine interior makes it the perfect date location in downtown Seattle.

Try a cheese platter, which can be a fun way to explore new flavors with your date! It can also be a good way to see if you have matching tastes… Obviously wine is a must at the Purple café. Let the waiter help you pair a wine with your course/cheese platter.

I happened to dine at the Purple Café & Wine Bar on a date with a very special guy. He knew I had a weakness for wine and cheese so he kept them coming. We enjoyed a variety of blue cheeses and I had a fabulous time. Afterwards we enjoyed a stroll around downtown and found ourselves in the middle of a salsa dancing festival… thank god for liquid courage.

There are also locations in Woodinville, Kirkland, and Bellevue.

Cafe Presse

Café Presse brings Parisian café classics to Capitol Hill. They open early at 7am and stay open late until 2am. Seattleites can enjoy a steamy cup of coffee in the morning, (before it’s socially acceptable to start drinking) watch a soccer game on the big screens with friends on the weekends, and peruse the abundantly stocked newsstand that includes a wide variety of magazines and newspapers.

And then it becomes time for brunch… my favorite meal of the day!

Brunch at Café Presse is exquisite including menu items such as Pain au Chocolat (bittersweet chocolate melted on baguette), Croque Monsieur (baked ham, gruyere and béchamel sandwich), and Oeufs Plats, Jambon, Fromage (two eggs broiled with ham and gruyere) to name a few.

The owners of Café Presse, Jim Drohman and Joanne Herron, also own Le Pichet in Pike Place Market. Jim and Joanne have both spent a significant amount of time in France and are in the business of bringing the French culture to Seattle through savory Perisian classics and wine. Café Presse is a place to enjoy throughout the day from a coffee and croissant in the morning to brunch and a cocktail midday to a dinner and drink until bars close at 2am.

Mamma Melina

Having lived in the University District in Seattle for five years, a girl learns where to go for a fancy Italian meal…. When the appeal of Pagliacci’s “grab-and-go” pizza doesn’t quite fit the desired mood.

Mamma Melina is just a walk away from campus, right across from the upscale University Village on 25th Ave NE and Blakely. You can enjoy their lovely outdoor patio when its warm and otherwise delight your senses in their modernly sophisticated décor and ambiance inside.

Indulge yourself in an extensive selection of seasonal antipasti’s, house made pastas, grilled meat and seafood, wood fired Neapolitan pizzas, and a fully stocked bar with the most attractive bartenders around (I used to date one)

The last time I was at Mamma Melina was for a romantic escape from the stresses of college with my boyfriend at the time. We waited for a table at the bar where I ordered a specialty cocktail. Upon being seated at our table my date accidently spilled my drink ALL OVER. After cleaning up the mess, the waiter brought over a fresh drink on the house for me! What’s not to love about great service?
